ACL Race Series competition main bearing set (part number 7M8397) for 4.2L Diesel Landcruiser (1HZ). These support the crankshaft in the block and, in a tuned engine, are responsible for ensuring oil reaches the entire crankshaft properly.
Internally, they feature three layers on a high-strength steel backing: a copper-lead-tin lining, a thin nickel barrier, and a lead, tin, and copper sliding layer, which is the surface that works against the crankshaft.
The upper bearings feature a full 180° oil groove, while the lower bearings have a partial groove to ensure oil flow to the connecting rods is not interrupted, with a progressive groove end to prevent pressure spikes. Race Series bearings have higher crush in the housing and a slightly more eccentric shape than standard bearings—two features designed to prevent the bearing from moving and to maintain proper lubrication when the block and connecting rods deform under load.
In standard size, ACL specifies this for a crankshaft journal of 66.995 to 67.005 mm, and for that diameter, it recommends an oil clearance of approximately 0.067 to 0.080 mm. If the crankshaft has been ground, the measurement changes.
They do not have the final silver tin plating of standard bearings, so their dark color—ranging from brown and black to bluish—is the factory finish and does not indicate any defect. ACL advises against polishing the surface of the bearings to adjust clearance; if more is needed, they should be combined with the HX version, which provides an additional 0.025 mm of clearance.
