ACL Race Series main bearings for Toyota 1S, 2S, 3S, 4S, 5S, part number 5M8361H. These support the crankshaft in the block and, in a tuned engine, are responsible for ensuring oil reaches the entire crankshaft properly.
These are tri-metal bearings: a SAE 1010 steel backing, a 0.3 mm copper, lead, and tin layer, a nickel barrier, and a lead, tin, and copper surface layer that conforms to the crankshaft surface and resists seizing.
The upper shells feature a full 180° oil groove, while the lower shells have a partial groove to ensure oil flow to the connecting rods is not restricted, with a tapered groove end to prevent pressure spikes. Race Series bearings have increased crush and a slightly higher eccentricity than standard bearings, two design features that prevent the bearing from shifting and ensure proper lubrication even as the block and connecting rods deform under load.
For the standard size, ACL specifies a crankshaft journal diameter of 54.985 to 55.000 mm and recommends an oil clearance of approximately 0.057 to 0.068 mm for this diameter. If the crankshaft has been reground, the measurement will change.
They do not have the silver-tin finish of standard bearings, so their dark color—ranging from brown and black to bluish—is the factory finish and does not indicate any defect. ACL advises against polishing the bearing surface to adjust clearance; if more clearance is needed, they can be combined with the HX version, which provides an additional 0.025 mm of clearance.
